TAM Webinar 82: Risk and Resilience in Asset Management
Many transportation agencies have made significant progress implementing core Transportation Asset Management (TAM) practices, including condition assessment, deterioration modeling, and investment optimization. The next challenge is determining how risk and resilience should influence those decisions. While federal requirements call for risk-based asset management plans, agencies continue to struggle with what this means in practical, measurable, and replicable terms — what risks to evaluate, how to measure them, how to incorporate them into project selection and investment strategies, and how to monitor progress.
TAM Webinar 82 will bring together panelists to share how they are currently approaching risk and resilience within their asset management programs. They will discuss challenges in addressing asset risk and vulnerability to extreme weather events and system disruptions, how risks are presently evaluated alongside performance and cost, and how resilience considerations can be incorporated into TAM processes without overcomplicating them. Looking ahead, panelists will share opportunities they see to implement the forthcoming Transportation Asset Risk and Resilience (TARR) Manual to standardize risk assessments, support benefit cost analysis, and guide design, operations, and maintenance decisions. Speakers will include:
- Claire Martini, Colorado Department of Transportation
- Habte Kassa, Geogria Department of Transportation
- Christopher Berrens, Minnesota Department of Transportation
